Welcome to Free Edits Things to
know before you choose an editor:
- A reputable editor will give you one chapter or up to
10 pages of free edits. Remember to interview and get
at least 3 if possible. You may like the person, but their editing
style may not suit your writing style.
- Make sure your contact has a time limit for the first
edit. 90 days is the short end and 6 months should be
the longest you have to wait.
- The contract should be a per page contract.
Hourly wages are too open ended and can be very costly. A per
page contract gives you a set budget. A manuscript page is 8.5
X 11, with one inch margins and the type is Times New Roman 12
pitch. The entire document should be double-spaced.
- The contract should include multiple edits without further
charges. If you choose to make changes based on your
editor's suggestions, then the manuscript needs to be edited again
for quality, consistency and structure.
- All editor's comments are suggestions. you do not have to make
any changes you do not want. When everything is said and done
it is your name on the book!
