Romance Genres include but are not limited to:

Contemporary Romance - This is your classic Nora Roberts type romance novel. It focuses on the romance and how everyday life instances interfere with the best romantic plans. These stories are woven around a romantic relationship and are not necessarily part of a series. Contemporary romance includes all time periods from 1945 to present day. These novels change based on social conscious through the eras and the technology and its uses of the time. The mentality of time took a major turn to more equality despite position between not only the sexes but the classes also. The hero may still have a protect the woman mentality, but a women usually doesn't have the "I need a man to protect me" attitude. They just want to be loved.

Historical Romance - Romance novels set in any time period prior to 1945, and taking place in any location. This is long area of time here that is not confined to any era or period. The scenes and customs include the technology of the time and its common uses. Before the World Wars women were seen as being more weak and needing protection. The heroine had always been easily kidnaped, tied up and thrown on the railroad tracks. Although the women currently being written about are stronger and more independent, the mentality of the men is the same. This provides some great confrontational material for pushing the plot forward.

Inspirational Romance - Romance novels in which religious or spiritual beliefs (in the context of any religion or spiritual belief system) are a major part of the romantic relationship. The hero and heroine have conflicts of a more moral basis of interpretation and implementation of an action and its consequences to their spiritual balance. If there is any sex, it is implied. Most of the time, there isn't any sexual interaction, but there is flirting, slight touching and lots of sexual and romantic tension.

"Otherworldly" Romance (This includes subgenres of fantasy, futuristic, paranormal and time-travel) - Romance novels in which the future, a fantasy world or paranormal happenings are an integral part of the plot.

Fantasy Romance takes place on another world and can include dragons, fairies, wizards, trolls, etc. The plot can also have magical elements to move it forward. The technology of the era tend to be medieval by practice.
Futuristic Romance takes place (of course) in the future. They should have some elements of an advanced more utopian society, with advanced technologies and social structure. Have fun here, this is your chance to create a world that focuses totally on the perfect romantic experience.
Paranormal Romance is our broadest of the "Otherworldly" category. These storylines typically take place in the now. They are paranormal because they work with such controversial subjects as ghosts, extrasensory perception, demons, angels, spectres, vampires and werewolves. They are romantic in plot using any of the listed items as either conflict to their plot, or the story's main characters can be of this species.
Time-Travel Romance stories take place in another time and/or another place. One of the partners of this romantic interlude is not from that time period in which the story is happening. The conflict to the happily ever after is not only the differences in time and thoughts, but also the innate need for the displaced character to get back to their own time. The happily ever after comes when both players feel comfortable in both times.

Young Adult Romance - is a plot driven book that develops a funny and innocent conflict between the characters. These conflicts approach old themes using the aspects for the current culture of that age such as text messaging, online personal pages, cell phones and secret languages. It focuses on the mixed emotions of the developing age and their inexperience in dealing with those emotions. The story should provide an insight as to how young adults feel within their everyday events, providing examples to the reader of how they can handle similar situations. These novels are primarily dialogue moving the story forward rapidly to keep the easily distracted reader intrigued and reading.
