Fiction Genres include but are not limited to:

Action/Adventure
Action/Adventure novels take us to breathtaking regions and on never ending adrenaline pumping trips through those regions. They show us the danger of scaling a tall mountain, the ferocity of a tiger protecting her cubs, the power of the ocean during a storm, and the tranquillity of a deep sea dive. The topography defines the action/adventure story as the plot requires the characters to master and succeed at these unbelievable feats of bravery and courage. These characters defy not only the elements but the region itself. Where the antagonist becomes the unmovable mountain and its supporting gang is the wind, snow, rain, animals, and sheer texture of the landscape itself.

Chick-Lit
A personal conversation between two women is the best way describe this genre. These are books written for women. They deal with women's issues with a lighter touch. Humourous, light-hearted, and an easy read are characteristics of this type of writing. There is no violence, no sex, no emotional roller coaster ride. Chick lit tends to focus on the happenings of living with humor, love and a sisterhood of support.

Young Readers
Young Readers genre is defined more by sentence structure, vocabulary and the process in which the writers works through the plot. Subject matter is so varied and it can happen in so many different places, but it focuses on situations that a young adult that age would deal with. The main characters are the age of the reading group the author is trying to sell to. There should be no graphic violence or sex. The sentence structure and vocabulary should be on the grade level that you are writing for.

Military
Military fiction used to only include plots that happened during wartime. Now military fiction has expanded to include fiction where one of the main characters wears a uniform. Its focus can be from a military spouse or dependent's perspective, it can also be a story that takes place during actual wartime and region. The plot should be something that is unique to an active military lifestyle and its trials and tribulations. Military fiction can be linked with all other genres.

Westerns
Western fiction takes place within definite regional aspects and time periods. American westerns start as early as the battle of the Alamo and last through the massacre of Wounded Knee. They take place from the western frontier of Texas all the way west to the Arizona territories. They spread from the Rio Grande, marking the start of Mexico to the railroad cattle towns of the Great Plains. Most start following the Civil War and the plots are based on the untamed west, where the climate, landscape and lack of civility allow for anonymity and the chance to live without judgement. There is a plethora of subjects that can be turned into a story, from the homesteads and living on the high plains to the mine camps and the clapboard towns that went up and came down overnight.
