Fantasy includes but is not limited to:
Alternate History
Repairman Jack, Archer Sweet, Robert McCammon, Stephen King and Tanya Huff are characters/authors that define this genre. These are stories that involve their personal attributes, can be graphic in nature, promoting shock value for emphasizing evil. Normally found in the horror section of the bookstores, these stories perpetuate the moral fiber of protecting the innocent from the knowledge of the evil that invades us trying to take over the universe.
Dark Fantasy
This genre of fantasy can be found in the horror section of your bookstores. This is a story line where the setting is medieval, the technology is medieval and the descriptive is graphic and an accurate representation of the mindless violence during the time of the crusades. Dark Fantasy is a combination of the horrors of the medieval period woven with classic fantasy of kingdoms, dragons, magic, and guilds, around a plot that saves their world as they know it.
Historical Fantasy
Historical fantasy is centered during a recognized historical period either during that actual period or a parallel period on another world. Centered in an era before technology where King George slew the dragon, and Merlin ruled with King Arthur. Within this already understood and accepted era the author adds the elements that make fantasy, well ... fantasy. You have your magic or magical creatures that enter into the era and then as the story ends, the magic - magically disappears.
Mythical
Mythical Fantasy has no assigned or constricting era in which it happens. Mythical fantasy is based on or includes characters from the ballads and songs of ancient mythologies. The plot is based on the themes, symbolism or stories from the folklore, myths or fairytales of all cultures. It can take place in any era, with or without history, and can cross into any genre. This is the least confining of the fantasy genres allowing not only for the power of the gods to help move the plot but all of the strengths of their minions.
Young Readers
Young Readers genre is defined more by sentence structure, vocabulary and the process in which the writers works through the plot. Subject matter is so varied and it can happen in so many different places, but it focuses on situations that a young adult that age would deal with. The main characters are the age of the reading group the author is trying to sell to. There should be no graphic violence or sex. The sentences structure and vocabulary should be on the grade level that you are writing for.
